Maitland, Kentucky is a town of roughly 100 residents in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky.
It’s known as the “porky capital of America.”
It’s one of only five states in the U.S. that bans hunting and trapping.
But the town has a unique set of rules, with the most famous being “No PORK.”
“If you come in here, you’re going to get a lot of puke,” says town resident Mike Hogg.
Hogg and his wife, Liz, have been coming to Maitlands Porky Park for years, often for the “fun” of seeing how the town reacts to the new game.
The Hoggs say they haven’t seen anything like it in decades.
“We’ve been to the park before,” Liz says, “and there was no puke.”
The Hoggses have had their own experience with the puke.
It was a common sight for the family, they say, and their children are now getting to know it for the first time.
“It’s something we can handle,” Mike says.
“And it’s something that we enjoy.”
Hogg says they’ve even caught some of the game themselves, but he doesn’t expect to get much puking.
“I think it’s just part of the job,” he says.
The Hogs have been to Mifflintown, Ohio, a town in southern Kentucky.
The town bans hunting as well, but it’s different because there are no regulations on where people can go.
And because the town is so close to the Ohio border, Hogg says there’s not much competition for hunters.
“There’s no puker,” he explains.
“But you can have fun.
We’ve seen the whole thing.
It happens a lot.”
The Hoggers say they’ve gotten to know the town well and the town’s people are welcoming.
“Everyone knows each other, and everyone has a good time,” Mike said.
“The town is very friendly.”
The Maitlons are not the only people who love to play this game.
“Every year, we get together, we play a lot,” Liz said.
And, she adds, “they’ve got an amazing time.”
Maitland Porky’s owner, Mark O’Leary, says the game was born from the town having no rules about where people could go.
“You have the whole ‘no pukers’ thing,” he said.
But not everyone has liked it, with some residents complaining that it’s too much of a distraction.
“They’re just playing,” said town resident Amy O’Connell.
“People don’t want to play.
It creates a lot more noise.”
Mitch Knezovich, who owns the Kentucky Wild game hunting club, has come to Miltons Porky to catch up on the game.
“I’ve been coming here for 20 years,” Knezy said.
He says he’s never seen anything quite like it.
“When you go to a hunting range, you just go out and hunt, and you go home, and then you sit down with your family and you talk about the hunt and you eat a little bit of pork and talk about your family, and they’re like, ‘What’s wrong with you?'”
He says the only reason people like the game is because it’s fun.
“If you want to get out and play, go out, and get a little thrill out of it, I don’t see why you shouldn’t,” he adds.
But the Hoggers and other residents say there’s a lot to love about MaitLons Porkys unique rules.
“You can play the game if you want,” Liz explained.
“No one can hurt you.
And it’s a little different.”
