There is a shortage of luggage packing boxes in Australia.
But the shortage has caused confusion and frustration for backpackers who have been asked to pack their bags in single boxes to avoid the extra costs of an international flight.
Key points:”You could just be looking at a box of paper, and you have to sort through a bunch of different things,” says David Larkin, owner of David Larkins’ Bag Service.
“It is not a good situation for the consumer.”
What is an international box?
The term international box refers to a box that is not designed to hold items from one country.
But it is often used interchangeably with single packing boxes.
“We are not an international company,” Mr Larkin said.
“When we go to Europe, we look for boxes that are not going to hold anything.”
The ABC understands many Australians have been caught off guard by the new regulations and have not been able to make the necessary arrangements.
“I can understand the need for the boxes, I just think it is a bit of a hassle,” Ms McLeod said.
But David Larksons Bag Service owner David Lakin says he is happy to help.
“There are many other companies out there that are making luggage boxes that will hold everything from bags to laptops,” Mr Lain said.
Mr Larkin says that while his service is able to deliver bags to the UK, the number of countries it can deliver to is limited.
“If it is only one country, you need a bigger box and you need to use an international carrier, it’s not going in the right way,” he said.
He says he’s confident he can make a solution to the shortage.
“But if you want to have a bigger bag, you’re not going be able to because of the cost,” he says.
“And then you get on an international plane, you can’t get to the airport in Australia.”
